BioMalcolm Reynolds was pretty sure he was neither drunk nor suffering from hangover-induced hallucination. He’d been careful last night not to overindulge on the engine-fermented wine Kaylee coaxed out of Serenity every now and then. Maybe he’d been shot again, or some such? He might be lying prone in the ship’s infirmary, heavily doped and dreaming of things all manner of confusing. Sounded like a good explanation. That was until he connected the dots and recalled that him getting shot always resulted into everyone making a gorram fuss about it, and there’d definitely been no fussing whatsoever recently. At least, no fussing over him. Zoë regularly got fussed over by Wash and Simon by Kaylee, and Inara… well. ‘Nara didn’t fuss. Wouldn’t be very Companion-y behaviour, that. Not that Mal wouldn’t fancy to see Inara fuss – over him, preferably – or had never thought about Ina––
Whoa now, shénme? The strangeness around was clearly starting to influence his thoughts, and Mal didn’t rightly appreciate it. His hand drifted almost instinctively down to his gun, finding the weapon tucked safely in its holster at his right thigh. Least one thing’s still as it should, Mal concluded as he glanced about with a healthy amount of distrust. The war might’ve been over long since, but the soldier’s instincts that kicked into gear within him were as sharp as ever. He’d no clue where he was or how he got here, but in light of River’s mysterious vanishing act earlier, Mal reckoned they just might be victims of the same phenomena. And should River really be here too, he might as well try to find her. Could be safer for everyone if he did – the girl was more than a mite whimsical in the brainpan, thanks to the Alliance whoon dahn. She was liable to get all kinds of funny notions, a number of ‘em likely somewhat dodgy.
Mal had been called “a man of honour in a den of thieves”, but he couldn’t really say about that. He just did what he had to in order to keep him and his fed and relatively safe, to keep Serenity flying. That was enough for him. As for honour, most of his attempts at that usually ended up coming back to bite him in the backside. Seemed to Mal that since that inauspicious day in Serenity Valley when he’d renounced his faith, God had similarly chosen to favour him with a cold shoulder. Could be that he was being ten kinds of stupid again here, but the girl was a part of the crew, his crew. And Mal Reynolds had never shirked from the captain’s duty to his crew. Nor did he shy away from stupid endeavours either, he’d certainly been labelled ‘psychotic’ enough times for that – mind, Mal had always considered ‘stupid’ something of a stretchy concept. But, as far as he could tell, there weren’t any Feds or Reavers around here; he chalked that up on the pro-side on his karma board. Any local colour, Mal could handle. Least he figured so. He was fairly positive. Well, it was fifty-fifty. Weren’t such bad odds, those. What was the worst thing that could happen, after all? Torture, gunshot wounds, blade scores, severed ears? All air through the engine. And as for the possibility of death?
Why, Mal was just too damn pretty to die.
